During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
